Durable medical equipment available to Hatteras Islanders through the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation | Island Free Press

We recently had a temporary need for a wheelchair on Hatteras Island, but our big question was where and how to get one?

It never occurred to me to contact the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation (HICF). We were not dealing with cancer, after all.

But a friend made a phone call for me, and then told me to contact the Cancer Foundation so they could help.

In addition to the wonderful work done for Hatteras Island cancer patients and their families over the past twenty years, HICF maintains a stock of durable medical equipment that is available for every member of Hatteras Island at no cost, regardless of their medical condition.

There is a wide array of products stored in Hatteras village, and all you have to do is ask for them.

There are a variety of mobility aids, ranging from canes and walkers, to a range of wheelchairs.

There are also several types of potty aids from toilet seat extenders to potty chairs, and a supply of adult chucks, (disposable underpads), and disposable underwear and other undergarments.

They even have hospital beds.

All you have to do if you are in need of equipment is to go to the website, www.hicf.org, and click on the menu on the top right of the page, and then click on DME, Durable Medical Equipment.

It takes you to the DME Request Form that is quick and simple, as is their response.

It was a godsend for us, and I encourage you to use this valuable service located here on the island.

I also encourage you to support the Cancer Foundation in other ways. If you are in a position to make a donation, you can contribute on the website by clicking on the DONATE button.

If you prefer, you can send a check to the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation, PO Box 442, Hatteras, NC 27943. If you wish to donate in someone’s memory or honor be sure to include that information.

COVID-19 has had a big impact on their fundraising efforts. The organization has always hosted numerous events that draw attention to their work, spreads their news across the island, and earns the organization significant funds, and that effort has been dealt a major blow over the past two years.

Fortunately, they have received several significant anonymous donations that have enabled them to continue their mission, but they still welcome any donations, large or small. Remember, those small gifts quickly add up!

So, while it is on your mind, go to www.hicf.org and help make a difference.
